The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the Texas Appraising Licensing and Certification Board (TALCB) to maintain an appraisal license. The information provided below can be found on the Board's website. However, we recommend you contact the Real Estate Board for more detailed information about the requirements for obtaining a real estate appraiser license.
 
Real Estate Appraiser State Requirements

Trainee Appraiser:

  Successfully complete 75 hours of Board-approved courses covering the topics required by the TALCB in subjects related to real estate appraisal. This must include 15 hours of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
  Submit a completed application, course completion certificates, and appropriate fee of $105.00. In order to be a Trainee Appraiser you must be affiliated with a certified appraiser and must perform appraisals under the active, personal and diligent direct and supervision of their sponsoring certified appraiser who shall sign the appraisal report and appraisal log.
State Licensed Appraiser:
  Successfully complete 150 hours of AQB required "core curriculum" courses. This must include the 15 hours of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) completed within two years of application.
  Legally acquire 2,000 hours of acceptable real estate appraisal experience over a minimum of 12 months.
  Submit completed application, fee of $235.00, course completion certificates and appraisal log and affidavit.  Once the board approves and accepts your application, education and experience you will be sent Promissor Candidate Handbook and Test Information Card. You may then contact PSI to schedule your exam appointment.
  Pass the approved state licensed appraiser exam.

Certified Residential Appraiser:

  Successfully complete 200 hours of AQB required "core curriculum" courses. This must include the 15 hours of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) completed within two years of application.
  Legally acquire 2,500 hours of acceptable real estate appraisal experience over a minimum of 24 months.
  Have an Associates degree or higher. In lieu of the required degree equivalent education may be accepted.
  Submit completed application, fee of $260.00, course completion certificates and appraisal log and affidavit.  Once the board approves and accepts your application, education and experience you will be sent Promissor Candidate Handbook and Test Information Card. You may then contact PSI to schedule your exam appointment.
  Pass the approved state licensed appraiser exam.
Certified General Appraiser:
  Successfully complete 300 hours of AQB required "core curriculum" courses. This must include the 15 hours of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) completed within two years of application.
  Legally acquire 3,000 hours of acceptable real estate appraisal experience over a minimum of 30 months. At least 1,500 hours must be non-residential real estate appraisal work.
  Have a Bachelors degree or higher. In lieu of the required degree equivalent education may be accepted.
  Submit completed application, fee of $310.00, course completion certificates and appraisal log and affidavit.  Once the board approves and accepts your application, education and experience you will be sent Promissor Candidate Handbook and Test Information Card. You may then contact PSI to schedule your exam appointment.
  Pass the approved state licensed appraiser exam

Continuing Education Requirements
 

Trainee appraisers are required to completed 14 hours of CE every year. This must include a 7 hour USPAP update each two year renewal period.

 

Certified and Licensed appraisers are required to complete 28 hours of ce which mucst include a 7 hour USPAP update each two year renewal period.
